Course Descriptions
First Year of Spanish:
Students will communicate basic needs, ask simple questions and demonstrate comphrehension of a wide variety of topics. Students will read for informational purposes, write simple sentences and lists, uring memorized or familiar material. Students will comprehend and use a few simple cultural practices.
Second Year of Spanish:
Students will communicate basic needs, ask simple questions, and demonstrate comphrehension of a wide variety of topics. Students will read for informational purposes, write simple sentences and lists, using memorized or familiar material. Students will comprehend and use a few simple cultural practices.
Third Year of Spanish:
Students will maintain face-to-face conversation in a highly restricted manner. Students will create statements or questions within the scope of limited language experience. They will write in paragraph form on familiar topics and be able to compare and contrast common social conventions.
Fourth Year of Spanish:
Students will participate in simple conversations in topics beyond the most immediate needs. Students will make inferences, extract specific information, and paraphgrase from materials written for a wide audience. They will write in organized paragrpaph form on topics grounded in personal experience. They will comprehend and use common social converntions and courtesies.
AP Spanish:
This class is an intensive review of grammar in preparation for the AP exam. Extensive reading of literature, conversation, and composition in the second language are emphasized. There is a possibility of receiving 12 credits upon successful completion of the AP exam. This class will also further prepare students to meet the Oregon University System Second Language proficiency entrance requirement and the new state-mandated CAM requirement.
Spanish for Native Speakers:
This course is for students with a fluent Spanish-speaking background. Students will increase their ability to read and write in Spanish by reading and writing about amterials written in or translated into Spanish, including novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and nonfiction. They will devleop their vocabulary and improve their knowledge of grammar. Comprehensive projects and presentations will also give them greater experience in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and preparing for similar assignments in other classes.
Curriculum
The ability to communicate in a second or third language is an important skill in this increasingly interdependent world. Many job opportunities hinge upon proficiency ina second language, and the number is increasing everyday.
Second language Admission Requirements:
Two years of study and/or proficiency in a second language to get into an Oregon University System Instituition.

Listening: Two years of study and/or proficiency in a second language to get into an Oregon University System Institution.
Speaking: Communicate information, express ideas, and accomplish tasks.
Reading: Comprehend and gain information from a variety of print sources.
Writing: Communicate information and express ideas in written form for a variety of audiences and purposes.
Culture: Comprehend and use appropriate verbal and nonverbal practices in common situations occuring within a second language culture. Compare and contrast culture practices of first and second language cultures.
