his or her personal best. Together, parents, students, and staff create
a caring environment where academic excellence blends with a joy of
learning.
- Jefferson is special because...
- we are a caring, welcoming community for children, families and
staff. Jefferson is dedicated to the personal excellence and
well-being of each child in a program-rich environment. Students are
provided dynamic and challenging academic standards in a strong,
well-balanced program and encouraged to develop essential life skills
including positive leadership, appreciation and care for others, and the
joy in learning.
“Our staff and volunteers work as a team to provide a positive,
respectful, and caring environment-modeling behaviors and attitudes that
enable our children to be successful and to teach others . . . they see
it, they do it, they pass it on! ' ---Lucy Oxenhandler, Educational

- Academic Excellence
- Our well-balanced academic program provides students with
opportunities to develop intellectually, socially, emotionally,
artistically, and physically. Children gain a strong foundation of
skills, learn meaningful content, develop thinking skills and apply
their knowledge in practical ways.
Our students spend focused time on math and reading. Our intermediate
classrooms participate in an all-school math grouping that allows the
math curriculum to be targeted at the student level. Our award winning
reading program features a strong assessment system that directs teacher
instruction for key reading skills.
We recognize that different children learn in different ways, and
offer a variety of instructional approaches that encourage students to
strive for their personal best. The curriculum is challenging and
engaging, and student projects are one way we provide opportunities to
integrate knowledge, apply skills, and pursue individual interests.
Jefferson Elementary was named as one of five elementary schools in
Oregon as a School of Excellence for Art Instruction. Our art program,
supplemented with volunteers, provides children the opportunity to learn
not only skills and techniques in art, but also introduces them to art
genres and masters.
- Family/Community
Involvement
- Jefferson offers a welcoming environment to families and community
members, encouraging involvement at many levels. A strong volunteer
program supports and enriches student learning.
Our parent-teacher association organizes many activities in the school,
including fund raising, the volunteer program, parent/child nights,
parent education, and more. A parent library is available and contains
books and home learning kits for check-out. Avenues for parent input
include surveys, small group gatherings, parent-teacher conferences and
the school site council.
Community volunteers provide support for mentor programs, science
projects, and other programs. Family and community volunteers, along
with the Jefferson staff, create a positive and safe community for
successful learning.
