Book Lists
Genre Lists - (Groups of books that share content, style or form)
- In the 4th and 5th grade, our students may study and
read one
genre at a time.
- Use these definitions when a new book is needed:
- Realistic Fiction
- Includes true-to-life characters set in modern times with events that could actually happen.
- May be about family, friends, school and sports.
Adventure or Survival Fiction
- In a realistic setting, the character suddenly must struggle to survive.
- The struggle may involve human versus nature, human v. animal, animal v. nature, etc.
- A credible, realistic solution ends the story.
-
Historical Fiction
(Lists from "abookintime.com")
- Set 50 years ago or more, the main conflict is realistic for that time period.
- Characters may be real or fictional; real events are mixed with fictional events.
- Mystery
- In a realistic setting, the characters have a puzzle or problem to solve.
- The writer may give hints that help or distract the reader from solving the mystery.
- A credible, realistic solution to the mystery ends the story.
- Fantasy
- The characters act in ways that make sense in the fantasy setting.
- The characters solve a problem by using magic or impossible strategies.
- Many types of fantasy: quests, animals talking, absurd
situations, magic.
- Science or Speculative Fiction
- The events could really happen, based on scientific facts.
- Perhaps set in the near or distant future, on Earth or other.
- Characters act in ways that make sense for the set logic of the story.
- Autobiography/Biography - Shelved at the Dewey Decimal number of 921.
- Folktales - Shelved at the 398's.
- Poetry - Shelved at the Dewey Decimal number of 811.
