Common Core State Standards
Common Core State Standards is a shared set of
increased learning expectations in English-language
arts and math that has been developed by teachers,
administrators, parents and education experts across
the nation. The new standards, designed to ensure
that all students graduate with the skills they need
to succeed in life, were adopted by the State of
Oregon in October 2010. The Corvallis School
District will be implementing Common Core State
Standards beginning with the 2011-2012 school year.
Community Vision For Education The Corvallis Community Vision for Education
represents the feedback of more than 1,300 community
members about what kind of education Corvallis
should offer its students.
Diversity and Inclusion Study/ Action Plan
Work is ongoing to implement various elements of the
district's diversity action plan designed to support
school cultures that embrace diversity and inclusion
and ensure all students have access to quality
educational programs. A Diversity Action
Planning Advisory Council is guiding the work,
initiated by a Diversity and Inclusion Committee in
the fall of 2008 to identify challenges and
opportunities within the district related to
providing a safe and welcoming environment for all
students, families and staff.
New High School
Schedule (Instructional Time Study)
A new high school schedule is in
place at both Crescent Valley and Corvallis
high schools for the 2011-2012 school year. The
change is the result of a year-long study of how instructional time
at Corvallis and Crescent Valley high schools can be
used more effectively to assure every high school
student is successful. A Guiding Team for
Instructional Time was charged
with studying the schedules of high-achieving
schools to determine their impact on student
learning. The team also sought input from students, parents,
teachers and other school staff in the process of
developing its recommendation for a common high school
schedule. The new schedule
was approved by the superintendent in December 2010.
Professional Learning Communities
The Corvallis School District is committed to
shifting the traditional educational focus on
teaching to a primary focus on learning. This is
being done through Professional Learning
Communities, a model in which teachers work within
collaborative teams to address the learning needs of
all students.
Strategic Work
Plans
Each year a strategic work focus outlines the work
to be done in the school district during that
particular school year to implement key
recommendations found in the Corvallis Community
Vision for Education. Strategic Work Plan 2010-1011 Strategic Work Focus

Sustainability
A Sustainability Steering Committee guides the
district's efforts to practice and teach the concept
of sustainability to assure that current and future
generations of students will enjoy a healthy
environment in which to live and learn.
